At IAD we operate three driving simulators, each utilizing the Silab (WIVW) driving simulation software. Our simulation environments enable us to safely explore forward-thinking concepts in vehicles. This includes conceptualization, prototypical implementation and evaluation of driver assistance systems, such as automated vehicle control, investigation of driver behavior and training of drivers.
We are currently researching these topics with our driving simulators:
- Information needs of vehicle occupants during teleoperated driving
- Cooperation between road users with varying automation levels using external human-machine interface concepts
- Dimensioning of haptic interaction concepts with active interfaces
- Development of the mental model of drivers during initial contact with automated vehicles
- Human-machine interface design of the teleoperation workspace
Static Driving Simulator
Our static driving simulator features a nearly 360° visual simulation within a complete vehicle mock-up (Chevrolet Aveo), ensuring high fidelity. The 180° forward visual simulation is achieved through three image channels. High-performance beamers (each 1920* 1200 pixels and 6,000 lumens) project onto three screens (each 3,30*2,07m). Additional screens are used for the side mirrors, while the rearview mirror is projected onto a Plexiglas screen. The simulator is equipped with an active steering wheel, active gas and brake pedals from Simcube and freely configurable displays for the dashboard and center console.
Portable Demonstrator
Our portable demonstrator features a seat box, with the environment displayed on three 65’’ monitors. The rearview and side mirrors as well as the vehicle body are integrated into the simulation environment. Like the static simulator, the demonstrator has an active steering wheel, active gas and brake pedals from Simcube and two freely configurable displays for the dashboard and infotainment system. The demonstrator's unique feature is its portability, allowing us to showcase new vehicle control and interaction concepts at exhibitions or project meetings.
Dynamic Driving Simulator
Our dynamic driving simulator is equipped with a seat box on a hexapod. The vehicle can be controlled using the steering wheel and pedals, while the environment is simulated on three monitors. Currently, the dynamic simulator is being upgraded to replace the monitors with a VR environment, further enhancing immersion.
